It is home learning again. This time from today till tomorrow. In these two days, my teacher is focusing on poems. We have to choose a poem whichwe like and point out the figurative language in the poem and what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use THAT kind of figurative language. Tough job, I'm sure.

Ok, here goes.

The poem I chose was:

A Red,Red Rose by Robert Burns.

O my Luve's like a red, red rose.
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear.
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear.
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear.
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve!
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my luve.
Tho' it were ten thousand mile!



First of all, there is already a hyperbole in the first line. Robert Burn's love is not just a red rose bt a red, RED rose. This is a hyperbole as he is exaggerating his love for, well, his love. The first line also contains a simile. 'my Luve is like a red, red rose'. This is a simile as there is the presence of the word 'like'. There are more hyperboles along the way. From the second and third stanza, Robert says that he will love his love until the seas run dry and the rocks melt. These two are clearly exaggerated and therefore are surely hyperboles.

In the last line of the third stanza, there is personification and a metaphor. The phrase 'sands o' life' is taking life to be sands, so it's a metaphor.
'The sands o' life shall run'. This phrase is personifying the sands as a person as sand definitely cannot run.
These are the figurative languages used in the poem.

I like this poem as it is written very sincerely and there is a lot of emotion in the poem. Robert Burns used all the correct words and the poem has a knightly and noble feeling to it as the old words like 'sands o' life' are all used correctly. It is also short and sweet and that is why I like it.
